Chair without shape
Published: Tue, 2010-09-07 06:03Tokujin Yoshioka is known for his poetic approach to design and his always surprising objects. Memory is no exception. The chair has a unique technical covering, allowing the user to change its shape. The idea from the designer is to echo the ever-changing expressions and beauty of nature. Memory raises the question of whether there's a design at all, since it transforms and memorises its shape, creating a free interplay between the seat and the sitter, who intervenes directly in the creative process, shaping the anatomy of the product.
The special fabric, cotton fibre with an aluminium core, is made from recycled aluminium and the result of a lengthy series of experiments performed by the designer in person on materials originally meant for the building trade. The fine textural quality is due in part to the combination of aluminium, which gives the fabric its malleability, with cotton canvas, which ensures that it is robust and easy to use, as well as comfortable.
